Insight on lyrics and songwriting: One time I heard someone in the Grateful Dead critique pop lyrics for being predictable. Based on line A, you can expect what line B is going to be, before it even gets there.
The worst you can do is detail A and B in exactly the same way. But there’s power in changing the way B is detailed. Don’t pronounce it the same way over the same chord. Extend it, shift to minor, shift keys; mutate the world so that the delivery of it says something subtextual about its meaning.
The most banal lyric can be resonate in the context of the music.
“She broke it off, she was tired of loving. Rather die alone, she settles for nothing*”
I mean, those lyrics kind of suck. But just as important as word choice is the specific attention in how you contrast the musical expression of “loving” vs. “nothing.” If "nothing" takes on a creepy minor chord, it makes the idea three-dimensional.
